Omega-3 Fish Oil

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A systematic review of 21 trials found omega-3 fish oil supplementation produced a mean triglyceride reduction of 27 mg/dL and modest HDL increase of 1.6 mg/dL compared to control.$15-$40 per month depending on dose and brand

How to use

Take 2-4 g of combined EPA and DHA daily with meals to minimize fishy aftertaste. Use enteric-coated or high-quality purified fish oil. Prescription-strength omega-3 (Vascepa, Lovaza) requires a doctor.

How it works

EPA and DHA reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis and increase triglyceride clearance by enhancing lipoprotein lipase activity. They also reduce VLDL secretion from the liver and have anti-inflammatory effects on arterial walls.

Where to buy

Pharmacies, grocery stores, and online. Trusted brands include Nordic Naturals, Carlson, Kirkland Signature, and NOW Foods.

Typical cost: $15-$40 per month depending on dose and brand

Safety notes

High doses (above 3 g/day) may slightly increase LDL in some individuals - monitor levels. May have mild blood-thinning effects; consult your doctor if on anticoagulants. Avoid fish-derived oils if allergic to fish.
