Oil Pulling (Sesame Oil)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Swish 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed sesame oil vigorously around the mouth for 15-20 minutes each morning before eating or drinking. Spit into the bin (not the sink - it can clog drains). Rinse with warm water, then brush as normal.
How it works
The saponification and emulsification of oil by oral bacteria disrupts microbial cell membranes. The viscous medium also mechanically scrubs plaque biofilm from tooth surfaces and traps bacteria, reducing their colony counts.
Where to buy
Cold-pressed sesame oil at most health food stores, Asian grocery stores, or online. Choose unrefined, food-grade oil.
Typical cost: $5-$12 for a 500 ml bottle lasting several weeks.
Safety notes
Do not swallow the oil - it contains the bacteria you are removing. Not suitable for children under 5 due to swallowing risk. Not a replacement for brushing, flossing, or professional dental cleaning.
