How to use
Rinse with 10-15 ml of neem mouthwash for 60 seconds twice daily after brushing. Spit out completely. Alternatively, use a neem twig (datun) to brush teeth for 2-3 minutes then discard.
How it works
Neem contains nimbidin, nimbin, and gedunin - triterpenoids with demonstrated antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and other periodontal pathogens. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce gingival swelling.
Where to buy
Neem mouthwash at health food stores, Indian grocery stores, or online. Neem twigs (datun) available at Indian or African grocery stores.
Typical cost: $6-$15 for a commercial neem mouthwash lasting 4-6 weeks.
Safety notes
Do not swallow. Avoid neem oil taken internally during pregnancy - it is associated with adverse effects. Topical mouthrinse use is considered safe for most adults.
