N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2025 study found NAC supplementation improved dyspnea and may normalize von Willebrand plasma levels in patients with Post-Acute-COVID-Sequela (PASC), pointing to antioxidant and vascular mechanisms.$15-$30 per month

How to use

Take 600 mg NAC once or twice daily on an empty stomach or with a light meal. Some practitioners use 600-1200 mg/day for post-viral recovery. Drink adequate water throughout the day.

How it works

NAC is a precursor to glutathione, the body's primary intracellular antioxidant. Post-viral illness depletes glutathione, allowing oxidative stress to impair mitochondria, damage endothelial cells, and sustain neuroinflammation. NAC also has mucolytic properties and helps regulate inflammatory cytokine signaling.

Where to buy

Health stores, pharmacies, Amazon. Brands: Thorne NAC, NOW Foods NAC, Life Extension NAC.

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month

Safety notes

Can interact with nitroglycerin and cause hypotension - avoid concurrent use. May reduce efficacy of some chemotherapy drugs. High doses (above 1800 mg/day) can cause nausea or GI upset. Asthmatics should start with low dose as it can occasionally trigger bronchospasm.
