Mindfulness Meditation (MBSR)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 controlled trials published in Medicine (PMID 40958241) found mindfulness-based interventions produced statistically significant improvements in self-reported ADHD symptoms (SMD 0.48), observer-rated symptoms (SMD 0.32), and functional outcomes (SMD 0.56) in adults.$0-100/year

How to use

Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of formal mindfulness practice on most days. Structured programs like MBSR (8 weeks, weekly group sessions plus daily home practice) have the strongest evidence. Apps such as Headspace, Insight Timer, or Waking Up can support daily practice. Consistency over months matters more than session length.

How it works

Mindfulness training strengthens prefrontal cortical circuits involved in attentional control, inhibitory control, and working memory through repeated directed-attention practice; it also reduces emotional reactivity and stress, which commonly amplify ADHD impairment in adults.

Where to buy

MBSR courses are offered by hospitals, meditation centers, and online via Palouse Mindfulness (free). Apps: Headspace ($70/year), Waking Up ($100/year), or Insight Timer (free tier available).

Typical cost: $0-100/year

Safety notes

Generally very safe. In rare cases, intensive meditation formats have been associated with anxiety or dissociation in people with trauma histories - start with shorter sessions and work with a qualified instructor if you have PTSD. Mindfulness is a complement to, not a substitute for, medication when medication has been prescribed.
