Maca Root

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT (PubMed 12472620) in healthy men aged 21-56 found improvement in sexual desire beginning at 8 weeks with both 1500 mg and 3000 mg doses. Critically, this effect was independent of testosterone or oestradiol levels, suggesting a non-hormonal mechanism for libido enhancement.$15-$30 per month

How to use

Take 1500-3000 mg of maca root powder or extract daily. Gelatinised maca (pre-cooked) is easier to digest than raw maca powder. Can be mixed into smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal, or taken as capsules. Allow 6-8 weeks of consistent daily use before assessing effects.

How it works

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) contains unique glucosinolate compounds called glucotropaeolin and m-methoxyglucotropaeolin, along with macamides and macaenes, which are thought to act on the central nervous system to modulate sexual desire. Studies confirm maca does not alter testosterone, LH, FSH, oestradiol, or prolactin - its libido effects appear to be centrally mediated.

Where to buy

The Maca Team Gelatinized Maca Powder (Amazon), Navitas Organics Maca Powder (Whole Foods, Amazon, Target), NOW Foods Maca 500 mg capsules (iHerb, Amazon). Available at most health food stores.

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month

Safety notes

Generally considered safe at doses up to 3000 mg/day in short-term studies. May cause mild digestive upset; gelatinised form is better tolerated. Men with hormone-sensitive prostate conditions should use caution - consult a doctor. Avoid during pregnancy without medical supervision. High doses may cause insomnia or agitation in some individuals.
