Soy Isoflavones
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 40-80 mg of soy isoflavones daily (standardised to contain at least 15-25 mg genistein), with meals to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Alternatively, incorporate 1-2 servings of whole soy foods daily (half-cup edamame contains ~18 mg isoflavones; 1 cup soy milk contains ~25 mg). Allow 8-12 weeks for effects to become noticeable.
How it works
Soy isoflavones (genistein, daidzein, glycitein) are phytoestrogens that bind weakly to oestrogen receptors alpha and beta. They exert oestrogen-like effects in tissues where oestrogen levels have fallen during menopause, potentially stabilising the hypothalamic thermoregulatory response. Their receptor selectivity differs from pharmaceutical oestrogens, producing weaker oestrogenic activity.
Where to buy
Solgar Isoflavones (iHerb, Vitamin Shoppe), NOW Foods MenoCool (Amazon, iHerb), Estroven Maximum Strength (Walmart, CVS, Target). Whole soy foods at any grocery store (edamame, tofu, tempeh, soy milk).
Typical cost: $15-$30 per month for supplements; soy foods $3-$6 per serving
Safety notes
Women with hormone-sensitive cancers (breast, ovarian, uterine) or a family history should consult their oncologist before use due to phytoestrogenic activity. May interact with tamoxifen and other hormone-modulating drugs. Those with thyroid conditions should space soy intake away from thyroid medication by at least 4 hours. May cause mild bloating or digestive upset.
