Magnesium

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A Phase 2 Mayo Clinic study (Cevette et al. 2011) found that 532 mg/day of oral magnesium for 3 months significantly benefited perception of tinnitus-related handicap in participants.$15-$30 per month

How to use

Take 400-500 mg of magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate daily with a meal. Magnesium glycinate is preferred for fewer GI side effects. Consistent daily use for at least 3 months is recommended.

How it works

Magnesium blocks excess calcium influx into cochlear hair cells, prevents overstimulation of NMDA receptors on the auditory nerve, and reduces reactive oxygen species - a triple mechanism that protects the inner ear from damage-related tinnitus.

Where to buy

Health food stores, pharmacies, Amazon - brands like Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, or Doctor's Best for high-quality magnesium glycinate.

Typical cost: $15-$30 per month

Safety notes

High doses can cause loose stools or diarrhea - start lower and increase gradually. Avoid supplemental magnesium if you have kidney disease. May interact with certain antibiotics and bisphosphonate medications.
