Lycopene
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Target 10-30 mg/day of lycopene from dietary sources or supplements. Tomato paste and cooked tomato products are the richest sources (1/2 cup tomato paste = ~30 mg lycopene; 1 cup marinara = ~25 mg). Lycopene is fat-soluble - always consume with a source of fat for optimal absorption. Supplements: 10-15 mg/day of lycopene in softgels.
How it works
Lycopene is a powerful carotenoid antioxidant that reduces oxidative DNA damage in prostate cells, inhibits IGF-1-mediated cell proliferation, and may modulate androgen receptor signalling. Its accumulation in prostate tissue (lycopene concentrates in the prostate above all other organs) positions it uniquely for local cytoprotective effects.
Where to buy
Dietary sources: tomato products (paste, sauce, sun-dried tomatoes), watermelon, pink grapefruit, papaya. Supplements: Jarrow Formulas Lycopene ($15-$20/60 softgels), NOW Foods Lycopene ($10-$15/60 softgels) - at pharmacies and health food stores.
Typical cost: $0-$20/month (dietary-first approach costs nothing extra).
Safety notes
Dietary lycopene from food is extremely safe. Caution at very high supplement doses (>120 mg/day): lycopenodermia (orange skin discolouration - harmless but cosmetically notable). Theoretically may interact with some cholesterol medications at high doses. If you have prostate cancer, discuss lycopene with your oncologist before supplementing.
