Lycopene (Tomato Carotenoid)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 6-month RCT (40 men) found 15 mg/day lycopene prevented prostate enlargement on ultrasound and reduced PSA levels versus placebo, where prostate size increased (Schwarz et al. 2008).$10-$20 per month for supplements

How to use

Take 15 mg of lycopene daily from a supplement, or consume cooked tomato products daily (cooked tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce significantly increase lycopene bioavailability versus raw). Pair with a fat source to improve absorption.

How it works

Lycopene accumulates in prostate tissue and inhibits androgen receptor signaling, IGF-1 pathways, and IL-6 expression - all of which drive prostate cell proliferation. Its potent antioxidant activity also reduces oxidative stress in the gland.

Where to buy

Supplement form at pharmacies and online (Jarrow, Solgar, Lyc-O-Mato brand); dietary sources include tomato paste, tomato sauce, watermelon, and pink grapefruit

Typical cost: $10-$20 per month for supplements

Safety notes

Very safe at 15 mg/day; no significant adverse effects reported in clinical trials. Evidence base is still small. Should not replace medical monitoring for prostate disease. Men with prostate cancer should consult their oncologist before supplementing.
