Lutein & Zeaxanthin (AREDS2 Formula)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 10 mg lutein + 2 mg zeaxanthin daily with a fat-containing meal to maximise absorption. Use a formula specifically matching the AREDS2 composition (also containing vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 400 IU, zinc 80 mg, copper 2 mg). Consistent daily use for at least 5 years is the studied regimen.
How it works
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids that concentrate in the macula, where they form the macular pigment. They act as a short-wavelength (blue light) filter and potent antioxidants, neutralising reactive oxygen species generated by photoreceptor metabolism and reducing oxidative damage to retinal pigment epithelium cells that drives AMD progression.
Where to buy
PreserVision AREDS 2 Formula (Bausch + Lomb) is the most studied brand and is widely available at CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, and Costco. MacuHealth and EyePromise AREDS 2 Plus are reputable alternatives. Look for FloraGLO-branded lutein on the label as a quality marker.
Typical cost: $25-$45 per month for branded AREDS2 formulas; generic store-brand versions run $15-$25/month
Safety notes
Do not substitute beta-carotene for lutein/zeaxanthin if you are a current or former smoker - AREDS2 data showed beta-carotene nearly doubled lung cancer risk in former smokers (OR 1.82). The AREDS2 formula is intended for people with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye; it does not prevent AMD in healthy eyes. Zinc at 80 mg/day may cause copper deficiency (the formula includes copper to compensate) and can cause nausea - take with food. Consult an ophthalmologist before starting to confirm AMD staging.
