Milk Thistle (Silymarin)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 140-420 mg of standardised silymarin extract (70-80% silymarin content) daily, divided into 2-3 doses with meals. Products labelled "milk thistle extract 80% silymarin" are most consistent. Allow 8-12 weeks before assessing any effect.
How it works
Silymarin, the active flavonoid complex in milk thistle seeds, acts as an antioxidant and may inhibit toxin entry into liver cells by blocking receptor sites on the cell membrane. It also promotes protein synthesis in hepatocytes, potentially supporting cell regeneration.
Where to buy
Nature's Way Milk Thistle Standardized (Amazon, iHerb), Jarrow Formulas Milk Thistle (Whole Foods, iHerb), Thorne Siliphos (Thorne.com). Available at most health food stores.
Typical cost: $12-$30 per month
