Lion's Mane Mushroom

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Mori et al. 2009 RCT (Phytotherapy Research, PMID 18844328) - 30 Japanese adults with mild cognitive impairment received 1,000 mg/day lion's mane or placebo for 16 weeks; the treatment group showed significantly higher cognitive function scores at weeks 8, 12, and 16 (p < 0.05), with scores declining after washout.$30-$50/month for quality standardised extracts.

How to use

Take 500-1,000 mg of a standardised lion's mane extract (minimum 30% beta-glucans) twice daily with food. Allow 4-8 weeks to assess effects. Powdered whole mushroom products require higher doses (2,000-3,000 mg/day) for equivalent effect.

How it works

Lion's mane contains hericenones and erinacines, which cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF supports neuronal survival, axonal regeneration, and myelin maintenance - all relevant to cognitive function and mental clarity.

Where to buy

Host Defense Lion's Mane ($30-$40/60 capsules), Real Mushrooms Lion's Mane ($40-$50/60 capsules), Nootropics Depot Lion's Mane - available online or at natural health stores.

Typical cost: $30-$50/month for quality standardised extracts.

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. Rare reports of skin itching (possible NGF-related effect). Avoid if allergic to mushrooms. Safety in pregnancy not established - avoid.
