Licorice Root Extract (Licochalcone A)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Use a moisturizer or serum containing licorice root extract (look for licochalcone A or glabridin on the ingredient list) twice daily on affected areas. Apply to clean skin before heavier creams.
How it works
Licochalcone A, derived from licorice root, inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase enzymes, blocking leukotriene and prostaglandin synthesis that drives vascular inflammation in rosacea. Its anti-inflammatory potency in erythema tests is comparable to 1% hydrocortisone acetate, without the skin-thinning risks of steroids.
Where to buy
Eucerin Redness Relief products (contain licochalcone A), La Roche-Posay Rosaliac range, Derma E Redness Relief; available at pharmacies, Ulta, and Amazon.
Typical cost: $18-$40 for targeted rosacea moisturizers containing licochalcone A
Safety notes
Well tolerated in clinical studies on sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. Avoid if you have a known allergy to licorice or related plants. Do not confuse with ingested licorice supplements, which have different safety profiles. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
