Korean Red Ginseng
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take Korean red ginseng in the form of a standardised drink or capsule (containing 0.032 mg/mL ginsenosides or equivalent) with or just before your first drink. Dose and formulation matter - look for preparations standardised to ginsenoside content.
How it works
Ginsenosides upregulate alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, accelerating the clearance of ethanol and its toxic metabolite acetaldehyde from the bloodstream. Lower acetaldehyde levels correlate directly with fewer hangover symptoms.
Where to buy
Korean grocery stores, Asian supermarkets, and online. Korean Ginseng Corp (KGC) and CheongKwanJang are established brands with standardised ginsenoside content.
Typical cost: $20-$50 per month
Safety notes
Ginseng can raise blood pressure and cause insomnia if taken late in the day. Avoid with warfarin, stimulants, and MAO inhibitors. Not for use during pregnancy. Evidence base is small and limited to one manufacturer's formulation.
