Iron and Ferritin Correction

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Trost et al. 2006 review (J Invest Dermatol) identified low serum ferritin (under 40 ng/mL) as a significant contributor to telogen effluvium and chronic hair shedding in women.$10-20/month

How to use

Get a blood test for serum ferritin (not just hemoglobin) before supplementing. If ferritin is below 40-70 ng/mL, take iron bisglycinate 25-36 mg daily on an empty stomach with vitamin C (500 mg) to enhance absorption. Retest after 3 months. Food sources: red meat, lentils, pumpkin seeds, spinach with lemon.

How it works

Ferritin (stored iron) is required for ribonucleotide reductase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis and rapid cell division in hair follicle matrix cells. Deficiency shifts follicles into telogen (resting phase) prematurely, causing diffuse shedding.

Where to buy

Iron bisglycinate (gentler on stomach than ferrous sulfate) available at pharmacies, health stores, Amazon. Brands: Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, Garden of Life.

Typical cost: $10-20/month

Safety notes

Do not supplement without confirmed deficiency - iron overload is dangerous. Keep iron supplements away from children (leading cause of pediatric poisoning). Iron bisglycinate preferred to reduce constipation and GI upset. Can interact with thyroid medication (take 4 hours apart) and some antibiotics.
