Diluted Raw Honey Scalp Treatment

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Al-Waili 2001 pilot study (n=30, European Journal of Medical Research, PMID 11485891) found 90% diluted crude honey applied every other day for 4 weeks completely resolved lesions within 2 weeks in all treated patients; 6 months of weekly prophylactic use prevented relapse in 100% vs. 80% relapse in untreated controls. Small sample and no blinding; replication needed.$5-$40 depending on honey type (raw local honey is cheapest; Manuka is premium)

How to use

Mix 9 parts raw honey with 1 part warm water until fully dissolved. Apply to affected scalp and facial areas, massaging gently. Leave on for 3 hours, then rinse with warm water. Use every other day for active flares; reduce to once weekly for maintenance. Raw Manuka or Sidr honey preferred for antimicrobial potency.

How it works

Honey exerts antifungal activity via hydrogen peroxide release, low pH, and high osmotic pressure that inhibit Malassezia growth. Its anti-inflammatory polyphenols and wound-healing glucoamylase enzymes may also reduce redness and flaking.

Where to buy

Raw, unprocessed honey from health food stores or farmers markets. Manuka honey (UMF 10+ or higher) from pharmacies or specialty retailers.

Typical cost: $5-$40 depending on honey type (raw local honey is cheapest; Manuka is premium)

Safety notes

Do not use on infants under 12 months (risk of Clostridium botulinum spores via skin contact is theoretical but honey is not appropriate for this age group internally). Can be messy - protect clothing and bedding. Check for bee product allergy before first use.
