Herbal Antimicrobial Protocol (Berberine + Oregano Oil + Neem)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2014 study by Chedid et al. in Global Advances in Health and Medicine found herbal antimicrobials were as effective as rifaximin for SIBO eradication (46% vs 34% normalization on lactulose breath test), with berberine showing particular efficacy.$40-$90/month for the combination protocol

How to use

Take berberine 500 mg twice daily, oregano oil 200 mg (emulsified, enteric-coated) twice daily, and neem 300 mg twice daily - all with meals. Run for 4 weeks then retest with breath test. Work with a practitioner for guidance on cycling and combination.

How it works

Berberine has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Oregano oil (carvacrol and thymol) disrupts bacterial cell membranes. Neem (azadirachtin) inhibits bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation in the small intestine.

Where to buy

Health food stores, iHerb, Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, Integrative Therapeutics

Typical cost: $40-$90/month for the combination protocol

Safety notes

Berberine can interact with metformin, cyclosporine, and some statins. Oregano oil can cause heartburn - use enteric-coated formulas. Do not use during pregnancy. Always confirm SIBO diagnosis before starting.
