Continuous Low-Level Heat Therapy
How to use
Apply a heating pad or wearable heat patch (ThermaCare) to your lower abdomen on the first 1-3 days of your period. Use continuously for at least 8-12 hours for best effect. Temperature should be warm, not hot enough to burn.
How it works
Heat relaxes uterine muscle contractions and increases blood flow, reducing ischemia-related pain. An RCT found continuous low-level heat as effective as ibuprofen for dysmenorrhea. Heat plus ibuprofen together was more effective than either alone.
Where to buy
Pharmacies. ThermaCare wearable patches ($10-15) or electric heating pad ($20-40).
Typical cost: $10-40
Safety notes
Do not use heat with topical pain creams containing menthol or capsaicin - combined heat can cause burns. Do not sleep with an electric heating pad.
