Green Tea (EGCG)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Kwon et al. 2007 (Phytomedicine) and preclinical studies show EGCG promotes hair follicle proliferation and inhibits DHT, but large-scale human RCTs are lacking.$5-20/month

How to use

Drink 2-3 cups of brewed green tea daily (steep 3-5 minutes in water just below boiling to preserve catechins). Alternatively, take 400-600 mg standardized green tea extract (50% EGCG) once daily with food.

How it works

EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) inhibits 5-alpha reductase reducing DHT at the follicle, promotes Wnt/beta-catenin signaling (a key hair growth pathway), extends anagen (growth phase), and reduces follicle-damaging oxidative stress.

Where to buy

Any grocery store for tea. Supplements at health stores, iHerb, Amazon. Look for 50%+ EGCG standardized extracts.

Typical cost: $5-20/month

Safety notes

Green tea extract supplements (not tea) can cause liver toxicity at high doses - stick to 400-600 mg/day maximum. Regular tea is very safe. Contains caffeine - limit intake if sensitive. Avoid taking supplements on an empty stomach.
