Green Tea (EGCG Catechins)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Drink 2-3 cups of unsweetened green tea per day, allowing it to swish briefly around teeth before swallowing. For stronger effect, use a catechin-containing mouthwash or locally delivered gel as directed by a dental professional.
How it works
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and other green tea catechins inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum - bacteria central to periodontal disease. EGCG also suppresses inflammatory cytokines (IL-1b, TNF-a) that drive gum tissue breakdown.
Where to buy
Loose-leaf or bagged green tea at grocery stores worldwide. EGCG supplements and catechin mouthwashes at health food stores or online. Look for matcha or high-catechin varieties.
Typical cost: A month's supply of green tea bags runs $4-$10. EGCG supplements run $12-$25/month.
Safety notes
Very high doses of green tea extract (EGCG supplements) have been linked to rare cases of liver injury - stick to 2-3 cups of brewed tea or products within label guidelines. Green tea contains caffeine; limit intake if sensitive.
