Flaxseed Lignans
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 25-40 g/day of freshly ground flaxseed (flax meal) added to yoghurt, smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods. Ground flaxseed is far superior to whole seeds (hull prevents digestion). Store ground flaxseed in the refrigerator and grind fresh for best results. Benefits are from SDG lignans (converted by gut bacteria to enterolignans) not ALA omega-3.
How it works
Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) in flaxseed is converted by colonic bacteria to enterodiol and enterolactone - mammalian lignans that bind weakly to estrogen receptors (phytoestrogens). These also have antioxidant activity and may modulate sex hormone-binding globulin, potentially improving the free-to-bound estrogen ratio during menopause.
Where to buy
Bob's Red Mill Organic Flaxseed Meal ($5-$8/16 oz), Spectrum Essentials Ground Flaxseed ($6-$10/14 oz), whole golden flaxseeds ($4-$8/lb) for grinding fresh - available at grocery stores, health food stores, and online.
Typical cost: $5-$10/month for ground flaxseed.
Safety notes
Generally very safe as a food. At high doses (>50 g/day) can impair thyroid iodine uptake - avoid very large amounts in hypothyroidism. Ground flaxseed should be refrigerated to prevent rancidity (rancid flaxseed is pro-oxidant). Increase water intake when adding flaxseed to diet (absorbs water). Start with smaller amounts (1 tsp) and increase gradually to avoid bloating.
