Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A Cochrane systematic review of 6 RCTs found feverfew standardized to 0.2-0.4% parthenolide reduces migraine frequency more than placebo.$15-$25 per month for standardized extract

How to use

Take 100-150 mg of a standardized feverfew extract (0.2% parthenolide minimum) once daily with food. Must be used continuously - stopping abruptly can cause rebound headaches.

How it works

Parthenolide, the active compound in feverfew, inhibits platelet aggregation, blocks prostaglandin synthesis, and suppresses serotonin release from platelets - all mechanisms relevant to migraine initiation. It may also inhibit CGRP-mediated vasodilation.

Where to buy

Health food stores, herb shops, Amazon - look for standardized extracts labeled 0.2%+ parthenolide. MigraHerb and Nature's Way are commonly available brands.

Typical cost: $15-$25 per month for standardized extract

Safety notes

Do not use during pregnancy - may stimulate uterine contractions. Discontinue gradually, not abruptly. May cause mouth ulcers if chewing raw leaves. Mild GI upset possible. Avoid if allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, or related plants.
