Ergonomic Workstation Modification

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2012 Cochrane review found insufficient high-quality evidence that ergonomic equipment treats established carpal tunnel syndrome, though one small trial reported an ergonomic keyboard reduced pain at 12 weeks and workplace studies show neutral-wrist setups lower median nerve pressure.$0-$150 one-time (many changes cost nothing)

How to use

Position your keyboard and mouse so wrists stay straight and neutral, elbows at roughly 90 degrees, and forearms parallel to the floor - avoid resting wrists on hard edges while typing. Consider a split or negative-tilt keyboard, a vertical or larger mouse, and a padded wrist rest used only during pauses. Take a 1-2 minute microbreak every 20-30 minutes to stretch and change hand position.

How it works

Carpal tunnel pressure rises when the wrist is bent up, down, or sideways and when the hand pinches or grips forcefully for long periods. Keeping the wrist neutral and reducing sustained repetitive load lowers the mechanical stress on the median nerve, which can prevent aggravation and give irritated tissue a chance to settle.

Where to buy

Office supply stores, Amazon - Logitech Ergo and Kinesis split keyboards, Logitech MX Vertical or Anker vertical mouse, Gimars gel wrist rests.

Typical cost: $0-$150 one-time (many changes cost nothing)

Safety notes

Ergonomic changes help prevent worsening but rarely reverse established moderate-to-severe cases on their own - combine with splinting and exercises. Wrist rests should support the palm during breaks, not press the wrist down while actively typing, which can increase tunnel pressure. Evidence for treating existing cases is limited.
