Rhodiola Rosea

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Multiple RCTs show benefit for mental and physical fatigue but methodological limitations prevent a STRONG rating; NCCIH notes insufficient evidence to draw firm conclusions.$15-35

How to use

Take 200-400 mg of a standardized extract (3% rosavins, 1% salidroside) once daily, 30 minutes before breakfast on an empty stomach. Use for up to 12 weeks. Start at the lower end and assess tolerance after 2 weeks.

How it works

Rhodiola is classified as an adaptogen - it modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and influences cortisol secretion. Salidroside and rosavins are thought to reduce oxidative stress and support mitochondrial energy production. A systematic review in PMC (PMC3541197) found 3 of 5 RCTs demonstrated reduction in mental fatigue and 2 of 6 showed improvement in physical fatigue.

Where to buy

Health food stores, pharmacies, Amazon. Look for standardized extracts specifying 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside.

Typical cost: $15-35

Safety notes

Possibly safe for up to 12 weeks; safety beyond that is unknown. May cause dizziness, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, or excessive salivation. A documented interaction with losartan (blood pressure medication) has been reported by NCCIH. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not combine with stimulants or medications metabolized by CYP enzymes without medical guidance.
