Elemental Diet (2-Week Liquid Formula Protocol)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Replace all meals with an elemental formula (pre-digested amino acids, simple sugars, and fats absorbed in the upper small intestine) for 14-21 days. Options include Physicians Elemental Diet (Integrative Therapeutics) or Vivonex. Consume 2,500-3,000 calories/day in divided doses. Work with a practitioner.
How it works
Elemental formulas are absorbed within the first few feet of the small intestine, leaving nothing for bacteria further down to ferment. This effectively starves the overgrowth without antibiotics or antimicrobials, causing bacterial die-off through nutrient deprivation.
Where to buy
Integrative Therapeutics Elemental Diet, Vivonex Plus (Nestle), or Peptamen - available through practitioner dispensaries, compounding pharmacies, or online.
Typical cost: $300-$500 for a full 2-week course
Safety notes
Difficult to adhere to - very unpalatable. Risk of refeeding syndrome if malnourished. Must be supervised by a practitioner. Recurrence is still possible without addressing underlying motility issues.
