Evening Primrose Oil (Oral)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Bamford et al. Cochrane systematic review (27 RCTs, n=1,596) found oral evening primrose oil and borage oil lack effect on eczema - improvement was similar to placebo. NCCIH concurs it has not been shown helpful for atopic dermatitis. PMID 23633319.$12-$25 for 60-90 capsules

How to use

If trialing: 500 mg capsules 2-4 times daily with food, for a minimum 12-week trial period. Some practitioners suggest 2-4 g/day total. Results, if any, take weeks to months to appear.

How it works

Evening primrose oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid. The theory is that people with eczema have impaired delta-6-desaturase enzyme activity, leading to GLA deficiency and defective skin barrier lipids. However, clinical trials have not confirmed this mechanism translates to symptom improvement.

Where to buy

Jarrow Formulas Evening Primrose Oil 1300 mg (Amazon, iHerb); Nature Made Evening Primrose Oil (Walgreens, CVS); Solgar Evening Primrose Oil 1300 mg (Whole Foods, Amazon).

Typical cost: $12-$25 for 60-90 capsules

Safety notes

Evidence does not support clinical use for eczema based on current Cochrane-level evidence. May interact with blood-thinning medications (warfarin, aspirin). Avoid during pregnancy. Can cause mild GI upset. Do not use as a substitute for proven treatments.
