Colloidal Oatmeal

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Cerio et al. (n=multiple RCTs reviewed) found that avenanthramide compounds in colloidal oatmeal inhibit NF-kB activity and release of proinflammatory cytokines and histamine, with documented efficacy in atopic dermatitis. PMID 20865844.$8-$18 per tube or tub

How to use

Apply colloidal oatmeal cream or lotion 2-3 times daily to affected areas, especially within 3 minutes of bathing while skin is still damp. For baths, add 1 cup of finely ground colloidal oatmeal to lukewarm water and soak for 10-15 minutes.

How it works

Colloidal oatmeal contains avenanthramides that block NF-kB signaling, reducing release of inflammatory cytokines and histamine. It also forms a physical barrier on the skin surface, locking in moisture and reducing transepidermal water loss.

Where to buy

Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream (Target, CVS, Amazon); CeraVe Moisturizing Cream with colloidal oatmeal (Walmart, Walgreens); Burt's Bees Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Lotion (Target, Amazon).

Typical cost: $8-$18 per tube or tub

Safety notes

Avoid if you have a known oat or gluten allergy. Patch-test before applying to large areas. Not a replacement for prescription topical corticosteroids in moderate-to-severe flares.
