Virgin Coconut Oil
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Apply a thin layer of virgin (unrefined) coconut oil to affected skin 2-3 times daily. Best applied to slightly damp skin after bathing. Use cold-pressed, unrefined oil for maximum lauric acid content.
How it works
Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus - a bacterium that colonizes eczema-prone skin and worsens inflammation. It also occludes the skin surface to reduce transepidermal water loss.
Where to buy
Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Amazon, Costco); Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (Whole Foods, Target); Dr. Bronners Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (Sprouts, Amazon).
Typical cost: $10-$20 for 14-16 oz jar
Safety notes
Use only unrefined virgin coconut oil, not fractionated or refined. May clog pores on the face. Patch-test first - some individuals are sensitive to tree nut-derived oils. Not recommended as a primary treatment in moderate-to-severe disease.
