Dead Sea Salt Baths (Balneophototherapy)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Klein et al. 2011 Phase III RCT (n=367, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, PMID 20840347) found synchronous Dead Sea salt bathing plus narrowband UVB was 49.5% more effective than narrowband UVB alone (P < 0.001), with benefit persisting at 6-month follow-up.$10-$25 per 1 kg bag

How to use

Dissolve 2-3 cups (approximately 500 g) of genuine Dead Sea salt in a warm bath (36-37 C). Soak for 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times per week. Pat skin dry gently and apply moisturiser immediately after. If combining with UVB phototherapy, follow your dermatologist's protocol.

How it works

Dead Sea water has a uniquely high concentration of magnesium, bromide, potassium, and calcium chloride salts compared to ocean water. These ions suppress T-lymphocyte proliferation, reduce inflammatory cytokine release, and enhance skin barrier hydration. When paired with UVB, the salt solution may enhance UV penetration.

Where to buy

Dead Sea salt is widely sold at pharmacies, beauty retailers (Ahava, Dr. Bronner's), and online. Verify authentic Dead Sea origin on the label.

Typical cost: $10-$25 per 1 kg bag

Safety notes

Do not use on actively infected or severely cracked skin. Very hot water can worsen flushing. If combining with UVB phototherapy, only do so under medical supervision to manage cumulative UV dose. Avoid use near eyes.
