Specific Bioactive Collagen Peptides
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 5 grams of specific bioactive collagen peptides daily, dissolved in water, juice, or added to food such as yogurt or oatmeal. Consistent daily use for at least 12 months is needed to see BMD changes. Look for products specifying FORTIBONE (the formulation used in key clinical trials). Best taken in the morning or post-exercise.
How it works
Type I collagen makes up approximately 90% of bone organic matrix, providing the structural scaffold into which calcium minerals are deposited. Orally ingested collagen peptides are absorbed as di- and tripeptides and appear in the bloodstream where they stimulate osteoblasts to increase collagen synthesis and suppress osteoclast differentiation. The net effect is a shift toward bone formation over resorption, evidenced by increased P1NP and decreased CTX-1 in clinical trials.
Where to buy
Further Food Collagen Peptides (FORTIBONE), Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (widely available at Costco, Target, Amazon), Garden of Life Grass Fed Collagen Beauty. Prioritize products specifying type I bovine collagen and ideally citing FORTIBONE.
Typical cost: $30-$60/month for 5 g/day dosing
Safety notes
Collagen peptides are derived from animal sources (bovine hide or marine) and are not suitable for vegans. Those with fish or shellfish allergies should avoid marine collagen. Some products contain added sugars or flavorings - check labels. Most clinical evidence comes from a specific FORTIBONE formulation; standard retail collagen powders may not produce identical results. Does not replace DEXA screening or prescribed osteoporosis treatment.
