Collagen Peptides (Hydrolysed Collagen)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Konig et al. 2018 12-month double-blind RCT in postmenopausal women (Nutrients, PMID 29337906) - 5 g specific collagen peptides daily significantly increased spine and femoral neck BMD versus placebo, with favourable shifts in bone turnover markers (increased formation, decreased degradation).$20-$50 per month depending on brand and dose.

How to use

Take 5 g of hydrolysed collagen peptides daily mixed into a warm or cold drink, smoothie, or food. Use consistently for at least 3-6 months. Look for products with peptides specifically shown to stimulate osteoblast activity (bioactive collagen peptides, FORTIBONE or similar).

How it works

Collagen type I makes up approximately 90% of the organic matrix of bone. Hydrolysed collagen peptides provide proline and hydroxyproline dipeptides that are absorbed intact into the bloodstream and reach bone tissue, where they stimulate osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, increasing new collagen synthesis and bone matrix deposition.

Where to buy

Health food stores and online. Brands including Vital Proteins, Further Food, and specialist bone-specific products. Ensure the product lists a dose of collagen peptides (not just gelatin or whole collagen).

Typical cost: $20-$50 per month depending on brand and dose.

Safety notes

Collagen supplements are derived from animal sources (bovine, marine, porcine) and are not suitable for vegans or those with fish allergies (for marine collagen). Generally well tolerated. Not a replacement for calcium and vitamin D. Evidence is primarily in postmenopausal women; effects in men and younger populations are less studied.
