Nightly Calf and Hamstring Stretching

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A 2012 RCT found nightly calf and hamstring stretching for 6 weeks reduced nocturnal leg cramp frequency by 1.2 cramps per night and severity on a VAS scale in adults over 55.Free

How to use

Each night before bed: stand facing a wall, place hands on wall, step one foot back and press heel flat to floor, hold 30 seconds each side. Follow with a seated hamstring stretch, holding 30 seconds per leg. Repeat the sequence twice.

How it works

Regular passive stretching increases muscle extensibility and reduces resting muscle spindle activity, lowering the threshold for involuntary motor neuron firing that triggers cramps. It also improves local circulation to the lower leg.

Where to buy

No equipment needed - a yoga mat is optional (under $20)

Typical cost: Free

Safety notes

Avoid aggressive bouncing stretches, which can strain the Achilles tendon. If you have balance issues, perform calf stretches seated or with support. Not suitable as sole treatment if cramps are caused by an underlying condition.
