Lion's Mane Mushroom

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial by Mori et al. (2009) in Phytotherapy Research found that participants taking Hericium erinaceus showed significantly higher cognitive function scores at weeks 8, 12, and 16 compared to placebo, with scores declining after discontinuation.$20-$45 for a 60-day supply

How to use

Take 500-1000 mg of a standardised lion's mane extract (containing at least 8:1 concentrated fruiting body) once or twice daily with food. Allow 4-8 weeks for noticeable effect. Powder can be mixed into coffee or smoothies.

How it works

Bioactive compounds hericenones and erinacines cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), supporting the maintenance and regrowth of neurons involved in learning and memory.

Where to buy

Host Defense (Paul Stamets), Real Mushrooms, and Nammex are well-regarded brands available on Amazon, iHerb, and direct brand websites.

Typical cost: $20-$45 for a 60-day supply

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated. Rare cases of allergic reaction reported, especially in individuals with mushroom allergies. Use with caution if immunosuppressed or taking immunomodulating medications. Safety in pregnancy not established.
