Omega-3 DHA
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 500-1000 mg of algae-derived DHA (or combined EPA/DHA fish oil providing at least 500 mg DHA) daily with a meal containing fat. Algae-derived DHA (e.g., life's DHA) is bioequivalent to fish oil and suitable for vegans.
How it works
DHA is a primary structural component of neuronal cell membrane phospholipids, particularly in synaptic regions. Adequate DHA maintains membrane fluidity, supports efficient neurotransmitter receptor function, and modulates neuroinflammatory pathways.
Where to buy
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Carlson Omega-3, and Thorne Super EPA+DHA are third-party tested options available at Costco, iHerb, and direct brand sites. Algae-based: Ovega-3 and Solgar Omega-3 Vegan.
Typical cost: $20-$50 for a 60-day supply
Safety notes
High doses (above 3 g/day total omega-3) can increase bleeding time - consult a doctor if on blood thinners or before surgery. May cause fishy burps; enteric-coated capsules reduce this. Check for fish or shellfish allergy when using marine-derived products.
