How to use

Perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week (e.g. brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging). This can be split into 30-minute sessions 5 days per week, or 10-minute bouts accumulated throughout the day. Aim for a pace where you can speak in short sentences but not sing. Consistency over weeks is more important than intensity.

How it works

Regular aerobic exercise causes structural and functional cardiovascular adaptations: reduced resting heart rate, improved arterial compliance, reduced peripheral vascular resistance, and enhanced endothelial nitric oxide production. Over time, these adaptations lower the sustained pressure load on artery walls. Exercise also reduces sympathetic nervous system tone and improves insulin sensitivity, both of which contribute to lower blood pressure.

Safety notes

People with uncontrolled hypertension (>180/110 mmHg), recent cardiac events, or severe cardiovascular disease should obtain medical clearance before starting an exercise programme. Blood pressure may transiently rise during exercise - this is normal. Start slowly and increase intensity gradually over 4-6 weeks. Stop and seek medical attention if you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or dizziness during exercise.
