Boswellia Serrata (Indian Frankincense)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Kimmatkar et al. 2003 RCT (Phytomedicine, PMID 18667054) - 30 patients with knee OA in a crossover trial; Boswellia extract (333 mg 3x/day) significantly reduced pain, swelling, and improved knee flexion and walking distance versus placebo (all p < 0.001). Results confirmed in subsequent larger trials.$15-$30/month.

How to use

Take 333-500 mg of Boswellia serrata extract (standardised to 30-65% boswellic acids, specifically enriched for AKBA content) three times daily with food. Effects may be felt within 1-2 weeks for pain; full anti-inflammatory effect builds over 4-8 weeks.

How it works

Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) specifically inhibits 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), blocking leukotriene synthesis without inhibiting COX enzymes - meaning it reduces inflammation without the GI and cardiovascular risks of traditional anti-inflammatories. Also inhibits matrix metalloproteinase-3.

Where to buy

Nature's Best Boswellia ($15-$25/60 tablets), NOW Foods Boswellia Extract ($15-$20/90 capsules), Solgar Boswell Resin Extract ($25-$35/60 capsules) - available at health food stores and online.

Typical cost: $15-$30/month.

Safety notes

Generally well tolerated; occasional GI side effects (nausea, diarrhoea, acid reflux) when taken on an empty stomach - always take with food. May interact with anticoagulants (mild blood-thinning properties). Avoid high doses in pregnancy. Some people with IBD or Crohn's respond well; others find it irritating - start at lower doses.
