Psyllium Husk (Soluble Fiber)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Mix 5-10 g (approximately 1-2 teaspoons) of psyllium husk powder into 240-300 ml (8-10 oz) of water and drink immediately before it gels. Take 15-30 minutes before meals, once or twice daily. Drink an additional full glass of water after each dose. Increase dose gradually over 1-2 weeks to minimise bloating.
How it works
Psyllium forms a viscous gel in the intestine that slows gastric emptying and traps dietary sugars, reducing the rate of glucose absorption. This blunts post-meal blood sugar peaks. Long-term use also improves insulin sensitivity and supports beneficial gut microbiota associated with glycemic regulation.
Where to buy
Metamucil (psyllium husk powder) at any pharmacy or grocery store. For pure psyllium without additives: NOW Psyllium Husk Powder or Anthony's Organic Psyllium Husk at Amazon or health food stores.
Typical cost: $10-$20 for a large container lasting 1-2 months.
Safety notes
Always take with adequate water (at least 240 ml per dose) - without sufficient fluid, psyllium can swell and block the throat or intestine. Separate psyllium from other medications by at least 2 hours as it can reduce their absorption. May cause bloating and gas initially. Not suitable for people with difficulty swallowing or intestinal blockages. Can lower blood sugar and enhance the effect of diabetes medications.
