Biotin and B-Complex Vitamins

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Patel et al. 2017 review (Skin Appendage Disord) found biotin supplementation improved hair growth in cases of documented biotin deficiency, with limited evidence in non-deficient individuals.$15-40/month

How to use

If deficiency is suspected (symptoms: brittle nails, fatigue, skin rash), take a B-complex with 2500-5000 mcg biotin plus B12, folate, and B6 daily with food. Otherwise, focus on dietary sources: eggs, salmon, almonds, sweet potato.

How it works

Biotin (B7) is essential for keratin synthesis - the protein making up 90% of hair structure. B12 and folate are required for red blood cell production and oxygen delivery to follicles. Deficiency of any of these directly impairs follicle function.

Where to buy

Any pharmacy, health food store, Amazon. Brands: Thorne B-Complex, Garden of Life, Nutrafol. Look for methylated B vitamins for better absorption.

Typical cost: $15-40/month

Safety notes

Biotin in doses over 5000 mcg can cause false positives/negatives on thyroid and cardiac lab tests - inform your doctor before blood tests. Generally very safe at recommended doses. Test for deficiency before supplementing blindly.
