Beta-Glucan

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Akramiene D et al. 2007 Medicina (PMID 17895634) - review of clinical evidence found beta-1,3/1,6-glucans derived from baker's yeast and mushrooms activate innate immunity through dectin-1 and CR3 receptors on macrophages and natural killer cells, enhancing phagocytosis and cytokine production without overstimulating adaptive immunity.$10-25/month

How to use

Take 250-500 mg of beta-1,3/1,6-glucan daily, preferably on an empty stomach. Baker's yeast-derived beta-glucan (Wellmune) and oat beta-glucan are the best-studied forms. Oat sources such as oatmeal and oat bran provide 1-4 g per serving. Supplement forms are more concentrated and standardized for consistent dosing.

How it works

Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans bind to dectin-1 receptors on macrophages and dendritic cells and to complement receptor 3 (CR3) on neutrophils and NK cells. This binding triggers innate immune activation: enhanced phagocytosis, reactive oxygen species production, and cytokine release (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-12). Beta-glucans prime innate immune cells without causing systemic inflammation.

Where to buy

NOW Foods Beta-1,3/1,6-Glucan ($15-25 for 90 caps), Jarrow Formulas Beta Glucan ($15-20), Host Defense Turkey Tail mushroom extract ($25-35). Available at health food stores and Amazon.

Typical cost: $10-25/month

Safety notes

Beta-glucan is generally very safe with an excellent tolerability profile. People with autoimmune conditions should use caution as immune stimulation could theoretically exacerbate flares. Avoid if taking immunosuppressive drugs. Oat-derived beta-glucan contains trace gluten - those with celiac disease should use yeast-derived or certified gluten-free versions.
