Berberine

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Meta-analysis of 12 RCTs (n=849, Complementary Therapies in Medicine 2020, PMID 32147051) found berberine significantly reduced waist-hip ratio (WMD -0.03, p < 0.05). Body weight and BMI changes were not statistically significant. Separate meta-analyses show stronger effects on blood glucose and insulin resistance, which may contribute to weight-related metabolic improvements.$20-$40 per month.

How to use

Take 500 mg of berberine HCl three times daily with meals (total 1,500 mg/day). This is the dose used in most clinical trials. Allow 4-8 weeks to assess effect.

How it works

Berberine activates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), a cellular energy sensor that improves insulin sensitivity, reduces glucose production in the liver, and modulates gut microbiota composition. These combined effects may support metabolic health and weight management.

Where to buy

Health food stores and online. Look for berberine HCl (hydrochloride) form for best absorption. Third-party tested brands are preferred.

Typical cost: $20-$40 per month.

Safety notes

Berberine can lower blood sugar - people with diabetes or on blood sugar-lowering medications must monitor closely and consult a doctor before use to avoid hypoglycemia. May interact with metformin and cyclosporine. Can cause GI side effects (nausea, constipation, diarrhea) especially at the start. Not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use without medical supervision if you have liver disease.
