Berberine
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 500 mg berberine extract 2-3 times daily with meals. Take with food to reduce GI side effects. Allow 4-8 weeks for metabolic effects to stabilize. Cycling (8 weeks on, 2 weeks off) is sometimes recommended.
How it works
Berberine activates AMPK, improving insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake similarly to metformin. By stabilizing blood sugar and reducing insulin spikes, it attenuates the glucose roller-coaster that drives carbohydrate and sugar cravings. It also modulates gut microbiome composition toward bacteria that produce satiety signals.
Where to buy
Health food stores, Amazon, iHerb. Look for berberine HCl standardized extracts.
Typical cost: $20-40/month
