Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Zhao JV 2021 Nutrients (PMID 34444711) - RCT in 80 adults showed berberine reduced total cholesterol by -0.39 mmol/L (95% CI -0.70 to -0.08) over 12 weeks and was associated with possible LDL-c lowering, with researchers concluding berberine is a promising cholesterol-lowering treatment.$25-50/month

How to use

Take 500 mg berberine HCl two to three times daily with meals. Allow 4-12 weeks for full lipid effects. Do not exceed 1500 mg/day without medical supervision.

How it works

Berberine activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and upregulates hepatic LDL receptors, increasing clearance of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. It also inhibits intestinal cholesterol absorption.

Where to buy

Thorne Berberine-500 ($35-45 for 60 caps), NOW Foods Berberine Glucose Support ($25-35 for 90 caps), Pure Encapsulations Berberine ($45-55 for 60 caps). Available at health food stores and online retailers.

Typical cost: $25-50/month
