Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 300-450 mg/day of a standardized extract containing 55% bacosides (the active constituents) with a fat-containing meal to improve absorption. Effects are gradual - most RCTs used 12-week minimum durations. Do not expect immediate results.
How it works
Bacosides A and B (the active steroidal saponins) enhance synaptic transmission by increasing serotonin and acetylcholine activity. Bacopa also upregulates antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase), reduces neuroinflammation via inhibition of TNF-alpha and IL-6, and may support dendritic branching in the hippocampus.
Where to buy
Himalaya Organic Bacopa, NOW Foods Bacopa Extract, Life Extension Bacopa (Synapsa brand standardized extract), Jarrow Formulas Bacopa - widely available at health food stores and online. The Synapsa trademarked extract has the most clinical trial data.
Typical cost: $15-$30/month
Safety notes
Most common side effects are gastrointestinal - nausea, bloating, and loose stools, especially on an empty stomach. Always take with food. May slow heart rate slightly; use caution in bradycardia. Possible interaction with anticholinergic medications (works by opposing mechanism). Avoid during pregnancy. Not proven to treat Alzheimer's disease or MCI - evidence is in healthy and mildly aging adults.
