Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi)
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 300-450 mg/day of a standardised extract (20-55% bacosides) with food - fat aids absorption. Split into two doses. Allow 8-12 weeks for full effect; bacopa works slowly but effects are sustained.
How it works
Bacosides A and B (active saponins) enhance synaptic transmission in the hippocampus, upregulate serotonin transporter activity, and reduce cortisol-related memory impairment. Bacopa also has antioxidant effects on brain tissue and may enhance acetylcholine signalling.
Where to buy
Himalaya Bacopa ($15-$20/60 tablets), Jarrow Formulas Brahmi ($20-$25/60 capsules), Nootropics Depot Bacopa - widely available online and at health food stores.
Typical cost: $15-$30/month.
Safety notes
Can cause mild GI upset (nausea, cramping, loose stools) especially on an empty stomach - always take with food. May slow heart rate slightly; caution with bradycardia medications. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Allow 3 months before assessing full effect.
