Astaxanthin
Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026
How to use
Take 6-12 mg of astaxanthin once daily with a fat-containing meal to maximize absorption, as it is a fat-soluble carotenoid. Higher-quality products specify Haematococcus pluvialis as the source. Use consistently for at least 12-16 weeks for best results.
How it works
Astaxanthin is a ketocarotenoid with exceptional antioxidant potency estimated at 6,000x that of vitamin C in singlet oxygen quenching. It crosses skin cell membranes, neutralizing UV-generated reactive oxygen species, suppressing MMP-1 collagen-degrading enzyme activity, and inhibiting inflammatory cytokines (IL-1alpha) in keratinocytes that drive photoaging.
Where to buy
BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin (grown from Haematococcus pluvialis), Nutrex Hawaii Astaxanthin, NOW Foods Astaxanthin. Available at Amazon, iHerb, Costco, and health food stores.
Typical cost: $20-$40 per month for a 6-12 mg daily dose
Safety notes
Very safe profile in human trials up to 12 mg/day. May cause skin or stool to take on a slightly orange-pink tint at higher doses - harmless. Not a substitute for sunscreen; adds antioxidant defense but does not replace physical UV protection. Avoid in pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. May interact with warfarin - consult a physician if on anticoagulants.
