Aloe Vera Topical Cream

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Syed et al. 1996 double-blind RCT (n=60, Tropical Medicine & International Health) found 0.5% aloe vera extract cream achieved an 83.3% cure rate vs. 6.6% for placebo (P < 0.001) over 16 weeks.$8-$20 per tube or bottle

How to use

Apply a thin layer of pure aloe vera gel or 0.5% aloe vera extract cream to affected plaques 2-3 times daily. Use only stabilised, fragrance-free formulations. Continue for at least 4-8 weeks to assess response.

How it works

Aloe contains anthraquinones and polysaccharides that inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, TNF-alpha), reduce epidermal proliferation, and provide a soothing barrier. Its salicylate content may also help loosen scale.

Where to buy

Health food stores, pharmacies, Amazon. Look for products listing aloe barbadensis leaf extract as the first or second ingredient with no added alcohol.

Typical cost: $8-$20 per tube or bottle

Safety notes

Patch-test on a small area first - contact dermatitis to aloe occurs in a minority of users. Avoid use near the eyes. Do not apply to open or infected skin.
