Acupuncture (Auricular and Body)

Reviewed by the Nimbera editorial team · Last updated May 2026

Liu et al. 2021 Cochrane-registered network meta-analysis of 23 RCTs found acupuncture reduced short-term nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings, though long-term abstinence outcomes were not superior to sham controls.$60-120/session; $400-800 for a full initial course

How to use

Seek a licensed acupuncturist (LAc) trained in auricular (ear) acupuncture. The NADA 5-point ear protocol is used specifically for addiction and cravings. Sessions typically last 30-45 minutes; a course of 6-10 weekly sessions is standard for craving reduction.

How it works

Acupuncture needle stimulation triggers release of endogenous opioids (beta-endorphin, enkephalin) and modulates dopamine and serotonin in mesolimbic pathways, reducing the neurochemical deficit state that drives craving. Autonomic nervous system calming also reduces stress-triggered craving episodes.

Where to buy

Licensed acupuncturists (LAc or DOM credentials). Use NCCAOM.org or Psychology Today directory to find practitioners.

Typical cost: $60-120/session; $400-800 for a full initial course

Safety notes

Use only single-use sterile needles - always verify this with your practitioner. Avoid if taking blood thinners (increased bruising risk). Evidence is limited compared to nicotine replacement therapy - use as complementary support, not sole treatment.
